Who is British sprinter Chijindu “CJ” Ujah? Inside his career, Olympic controversy, and comeback journey

British sprinter Chijindu Ujah, better known as CJ Ujah, is one of the fastest runners Great Britain has produced in recent years. He made headlines after helping Britain win major relay medals and becoming one of the few British athletes to run the 100 meters in under 10 seconds. However, his career also faced a major setback after a doping case linked to the Tokyo Olympics. Early life and education of CJ Ujah

CJ Ujah was born on March 5, 1994, in Enfield, London, to Nigerian parents. He grew up in North London and studied at St. Matthew’s CE Primary School and later Bishop Stopford’s School. After school, he attended Sir George Monoux College in Walthamstow. He later earned a sports science degree from Middlesex University.
From a young age, Ujah showed great speed on the track. He quickly became one of Britain’s top young sprinters. In 2013, he won gold in the 100 meters at the European Junior Championships. He was coached by Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo.

CJ Ujah’s rise in sprinting and relay success

Ujah became widely known in 2014 when he ran the 100 meters in 9.96 seconds in Hengelo, Netherlands. At that time, he became the youngest British sprinter to break the 10-second mark.
He later represented Great Britain's men's national athletics team at major international events, including the Olympics and World Championships.
One of the biggest moments of his career came at the 2017 World Championships in London. Ujah ran the first leg for Britain’s 4x100m relay team as they shocked the United States and won gold. A few weeks later, he also won the Diamond League 100m title in Brussels.
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he narrowly missed reaching the 100m final by just 0.01 seconds.

Tokyo Olympics doping case and medal loss

At the delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Ujah helped Britain finish second in the men’s 4x100m relay and win silver. However, things changed soon after the Games ended.
His doping samples tested positive for banned substances called Ostarine and S-23. His “B” sample also came back positive. In February 2022, the Court of Arbitration for Sport officially disqualified Britain’s relay team, and the silver medals were taken away.
In October 2022, the Athletics Integrity Unit gave Ujah a 22-month ban. The AIU and World Anti-Doping Agency said the violation was not intentional and linked it to contaminated supplements bought online.

CJ Ujah’s comeback and recent updates

After completing his suspension in 2023, Ujah returned to athletics. In 2024, he was recalled to Britain’s relay squad for the World Athletics Relays. He also competed at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome, where he spoke openly about learning from his mistakes and trying to rebuild his career. While some online reports mention a net worth of around $5 million, there is no officially confirmed public figure for Ujah’s earnings or wealth.
CJ Ujah was recently charged in an alleged cryptocurrency fraud case. Prosecutors claim the group targeted victims through fake calls pretending to be police officers and crypto company staff. Authorities said one victim lost more than £300,000. Ujah appeared in court on April 30, 2026, and was later granted bail. His next court hearing is scheduled for May 28 at Chelmsford Crown Court.
