She said it was a private comment she made to Elena Vesnina before the interview started and not something she expected to go on air.

She told reporters she was “really upset” when the story was included, and it made her feel uncomfortable later when she saw Rune at tournaments.

Kudermetova said the message from Rune was simple. He wrote to her on social media, and she replied that she was married and a bit older than him.

She said they both laughed and that was the end of it. But once that small moment was shared online, it took on a life of its own with fans and media discussing it.

Elena Vesnina, who hosts the podcast, said she and her team would not have released anything that a guest did not want published.


Vesnina told TENNIS.com that she worked closely with Kudermetova and would not knowingly put out content that a guest did not agree to. She said the situation “got out of control” and drew more attention than expected.

After Kudermetova’s story spread online, another player, Anna Kalinskaya, referenced similar experiences in a different interview.

She said that someone had sent messages to her many times, adding fuel to the ongoing talk. This made the whole situation involving Holger Rune grow even more on social media.

Holger Rune, the Danish player who is currently recovering from an Achilles heel injury and may start the 2026 season late, responded to the topic himself on social media.

He suggested that cultural differences could be part of how the story was seen by fans and the media. His response helped change some of the online conversation from criticism to clarification.
