Speaking on Hard Court, he referred to comments made by Dmitry Tursunov and made it clear he agrees with that viewpoint. He said, “Have you read Dmitry Tursunov’s telegram? After another Venus Williams defeat, he said, I have incredible respect for Venus Williams’ achievements. Multiple Grand Slam singles champion, world number one, but it’s time. The wildcard into the main draw would be useful for many girls. This wildcard could have been used more productively, and I, in principle, completely agree with him.”
The timing of these comments is important. Williams has struggled for wins since her return, losing in the opening round of all five tournaments she has played in 2026. Her most recent defeat was at Indian Wells, where she went down in three sets to Diane Parry. Still, her comeback itself has been a talking point. After 14 months away, she returned at the Washington Open last year and even picked up a memorable win over Peyton Stearns before exiting in the next round.
