University of Toledo pole vaulter Eva Moran dies at 19 in devastating three car Ohio accident

The University of Toledo community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of freshman pole vaulter Eva Moran, who died in a car accident in Ohio at just 19 years old. According to 13abc and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 5:28 p.m. on May 29 in Claridon Township. Authorities said Moran was driving eastbound when her vehicle struck the rear side of another stopped car before crossing into the opposite lane and being hit by a second vehicle. Investigators believe the impact threw Moran from her car.

She was taken to Marion General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The crash also left 19-year-old Nathaniel Blankenship with possible injuries, while 23-year-old Dalila Zamudio suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital. News of Moran’s death quickly spread through the Toledo athletics community, where teammates, coaches, and school officials remembered her not only as a talented athlete, but also as a kind and hardworking person who brought positive energy wherever she went.

Eva Moran remembered by Toledo coaches and teammates following deadly Ohio crash

Eva Moran had recently completed her freshman season with Toledo’s track and field team and was beginning to make a strong name for herself in pole vaulting. Just weeks before the accident, she competed at the Mid-American Conference outdoor championships and recorded a personal-best vault of 3.57 meters. That mark ranked sixth in Toledo school history and earned her a 10th-place finish in the event.

Before joining Toledo in 2024, Moran attended River Valley High School in Caledonia, Ohio. She competed in basketball, cross country, and track during her high school years and was known for being active in multiple sports.

Toledo director of cross country and track and field Andrea Grove-McDonough shared an emotional message following Moran’s passing.

She said, “There are no words to adequately express the sadness our team feels over the loss of Eva. She was a remarkable young woman whose energy, determination and kindness made an immediate impact on our program.”

Grove-McDonough also spoke about Moran’s attitude toward sports and her teammates.

She added, “Eva approached every practice, every competition and every challenge with a positive attitude and a genuine love for her teammates. She was eager to learn, eager to improve and proud to represent the University of Toledo.”

University of Toledo athletic director Tom Moreland also released a statement through the school.

He said, “Eva was an outstanding student-athlete whose determination, character and positive spirit made an impact on everyone who had the opportunity to know her.”

Moran is survived by her parents, Alena and Derrek, along with her brothers Maxxon and Jaxton and sister Kyra.
