Tiger Woods’ record seems to be in danger as Justin Rose appears to be in full form at the 2026 Farmers Insurance Open. Justin Rose is separated from the competition by eight shots; that’s the margin. It’s also the margin separating him from everyone except Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Scottie Scheffler over the past 20 years. Justin Ray, a golf professional, revealed the record on X on Saturday evening. The biggest 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour in 20 years is eight strokes, which was only achieved three times before Rose departed Torrey Pines' South Course with that identical cushion.

Woods was the last player to maintain a nine-shot lead after 54 holes at the 2000 WGC Invitational. A quarter of a century ago, the all-time marks sat even higher. He carried nine shots into the final round of the 1997 Masters, cruising to a 12-shot victory at Augusta.

The PGA Tour limits the Tiger Woods era

Torrey Pines has always rewarded consistent performance; no one recognized that better than Tiger Woods during his peak years. The venue brought eight of his 82 career wins, including seven at the Farmers Insurance Open and the historic 2008 U.S. Open triumph over Rocco Mediate on a broken leg.

Tiger Woods won four consecutive times here between 2005 and 2008, a stretch of supremacy that made Torrey synonymous with his name. Rose captured the 2019 title against a field that included Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, and Woods himself. When compared to the depth of the current tour, Rose's position's statistical rarity becomes more apparent.

Justin Rose hasn't talked about anything about the historical company he's maintaining. After his second round, he noted that the large lead wouldn’t affect how he approached the South Course, a statement of process over outcome that fits the quiet weight of the moment. Whether he turns this position into his 13th PGA Tour victory will be decided in Sunday's final round.

However, the goal is not the conversion. Rose is standing where almost no one stands anymore, in a lane that’s been empty for 20 years, except for Woods, McIlroy, and Scheffler. This is practically impossible with the current tour.
