Terry Gannon was born on November 1, 1963, in Joliet, Illinois. He studied at Joliet Catholic High School and later attended North Carolina State University. At NC State he played under legendary coach Jim Valvano. He was also a strong student and earned Academic All-American honors twice. In 1983, he helped the “Cardiac Pack” win the NCAA men’s basketball championship. He graduated in 1985 with a history degree.

After college, he briefly considered coaching and even played professional basketball in Europe. Soon, he chose broadcasting instead. He started in 1986 working on Jim Valvano’s television and radio programs. He then called regional basketball games and minor league baseball. By the early 1990s, he was working for ABC as a college basketball commentator and football announcer.

Gannon later began covering figure skating and golf. He reported major events such as the Tour de France, the Little League World Series and the FIFA World Cup. In 2010, he joined NBC Sports and the Golf Channel. From there, his career expanded quickly.
