Portugal Football to monitor Mexico’s security before Cristiano Ronaldo and team’s friendly visit next month ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

The Portuguese Football Federation is reviewing security conditions in Mexico before the Cristiano Ronaldo-led national team travels next month. Portugal is scheduled to play Mexico at the renovated Azteca Stadium on March 28. However, the recent killing of cartel leader El Mencho has led to widespread violence across several regions. Authorities have raised alerts across the country. The situation has come just months before the FIFA World Cup 2026, increasing global attention on safety preparations in host venues.

Mexico is one of the main hosts of the upcoming World Cup, and international teams are closely watching developments. The Portugal squad has not yet confirmed whether it will travel as planned. Officials said discussions are ongoing with the Mexican government and football authorities. Portugal waits for security clearance in Mexico before confirming travel

The federation stated in a statement that it continues to follow the situation carefully and will decide only after regular coordination with government authorities and the Mexican Football Federation. Officials stressed that protecting players, coaching staff and supporters remains their most important consideration when deciding whether the match should take place.
