Paul Merson has taken a sharp and humorous dig at former Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim. The ex-Arsenal midfielder suggested that Amorim’s media comments near the end of his spell made it sound like he was ready to be dismissed. Amorim joined United in October 2024 after Erik ten Hag was shown the door. United finished 15th in the 2024-25 Premier League season. They failed to lift any silverware. Paul Merson shared his views on Ruben Amorim while speaking on the Stick to Football podcast. Using a funny airport comparison, Merson suggested that the Portuguese coach sounded like a man waiting to leave. He said that near the end of the season, Manchester United no longer looked like an easy team to face, unlike a few weeks earlier when opponents would have welcomed playing them.

Merson added that United’s players looked lost and were often used in the wrong roles. According to him, Amorim’s press comments made it seem like he was pushing himself toward the exit. He described it as if the manager was turning up every weekend with his bags packed, ready for departure. Merson felt Amorim even hinted that he would sack himself if he were in charge.

Amorim also appeared frustrated with the club’s leadership in his final press conferences. He openly spoke about wanting full control as a manager rather than working only as a head coach. These comments increased tension behind the scenes. His final match ended in a 1-1 draw against Leeds United, which proved to be the final straw.

After his dismissal, Darren Fletcher briefly stepped in as caretaker. United drew against Burnley and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton. Things changed quickly once Michael Carrick took charge. United won three straight matches, including big wins over Manchester City and Arsenal. They also beat Fulham 3-2.

Carrick has already matched Amorim’s best winning run at the club. United are now fourth in the league, though still 12 points behind Arsenal. Their next test comes against Tottenham Hotspur on February 7, a team they have not beaten since October 2022!
