He turned professional in 2020 and won both of his pro fights. Before that, he made a strong mark as an amateur heavyweight. Boxing was not just his sport. It was his family’s life. His father, Paul McCullagh Sr, was a top amateur boxer. His grandfather, also named Paul McCullagh, won an amateur title and later became a respected coach. He worked with big names like Barry McGuigan and IBF welterweight champion Anthony Cacace.Tributes started pouring in within hours of the news. It said, “IABA is saddened by the passing of boxer, 25-year-old Paul McCullagh Junior.” The group spoke about his journey in detail. They noted that he was part of clubs like St. John Bosco Belfast and his family’s McCullagh’s ABC. He won his first title in 2012 and later claimed the Ulster Elite heavyweight title in 2019.That same year, McCullagh Jr represented Ulster High Performance against New York. He also boxed for Ireland in a dual nations event against the Netherlands. After his success in 2019, he moved into the professional ranks and picked up wins early in his career.The IABA added, “Paul’s grandfather and father were both champion amateur boxers. His grandfather was a highly regarded coach, and his father is a professional referee. IABA extends deepest condolences to Paul’s family, club and loved ones.”A representative from his boxing club spoke to The Irish Times and shared a touching tribute.
