Tennis star Novak Djokovic shared a calm and honest reaction after his tough loss at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The Serbian player said he would not judge or criticize the crowd even though the atmosphere during his match was very loud and emotional. Novak Djokovic faced British player Jack Draper in the fourth round of the 2026 tournament. The match turned into a long battle and went to three sets. Draper, who is also the defending champion, finally won the contest 4–6, 6–4, 7–6(5).The crowd inside the stadium stayed highly involved throughout the match. Fans reacted loudly during important points, which added even more tension to the contest. Earlier in the tournament, crowd behavior had already become a talking point after some fans heckled Jannik Sinner during his match with Joao Fonseca. In another match, some people in the stands booed a chair umpire during Elena Rybakina’s match against Sonay Kartal.Despite all the noise and emotions in the stadium, Djokovic said he understands why fans sometimes react that way during intense moments in a match.“I don’t know. I don’t know what kind of situation you’re referring to, but, I mean, it was several – it is what it is. It’s excitement from the crowd, as well.
I mean, I understand that people sometimes in heat of the moment, in the battle, like the one tonight, get excited during the point, and, you know, maybe between the points and – yeah, they just excited. I don’t judge, criticize anybody.”He also said the match itself was thrilling for everyone watching.“It was an incredible match to be part of on the court, and also, I’m sure, for the people watching in the stadium.”

Later in the same press conference, Novak Djokovic spoke honestly about how the loss felt. The Serbian legend said defeats like this are always difficult because the match was so close from start to finish.Novak Djokovic fought hard in the opening set and took it 6–4. But Jack Draper stayed patient and slowly turned the match around. Draper won the second set 6–4 and then held his nerve in a tense final-set tiebreak to seal the victory.Because the match was decided by just a few points, Djokovic admitted the result was painful in the moment. Still, he chose to focus on the effort he gave during the long battle.“Bitter feeling right now, losing a match like this. But proud of myself for fighting and really giving it all on the court. That’s for sure. That’s the one thing that I’ll take as a highlight, you know, just the fact of not giving up and trying.”The 24-time Grand Slam champion also showed respect for Draper’s performance, as the British player successfully defended his title hopes in the tournament.For Novak Djokovic, the season now moves forward. The Serbian star is expected to play next at the Miami Open, which is the second tournament in the famous “Sunshine Double” that takes place shortly after Indian Wells.
