MLS begins new chapter with World Cup boost and major 2027 schedule change
Major League Soccer begins its 31st season this weekend, but the bigger story goes beyond opening day. The league is stepping into a crucial two year window that could reshape its future. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be played across North America this summer, placing MLS in the global spotlight. Soon after, the league plans to change its calendar in 2027 to better match top international competitions.
MLS leaders believe the coming months will test how ready the league is for global attention. The season will pause for seven weeks from May 25 to July 16 to accommodate the World Cup. Several MLS stars are expected to feature in the tournament, including Lionel Messi of Inter Miami and Son Heung min of Los Angeles FC. League officials hope that once the World Cup ends, MLS will benefit from what many call a boost in interest that follows soccer’s biggest event.
The World Cup will be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with 13 host cities in the US and Canada that are also home to MLS clubs. That overlap gives MLS a rare opportunity to connect directly with new fans. Commissioner Don Garber said, "The World Cup will accelerate the growth of the sport across North America in ways we've never seen before. Major League Soccer is uniquely positioned at the center of that moment, with all 13 host cities in the U.S. and Canada home to MLS clubs. We expect to have a record number of players in the tournament, and our facilities and communities will play a role in delivering the tournament."
The league expects strong television ratings and increased attendance once play resumes in mid July. Youth participation and local club engagement are also expected to rise. MLS executives see this period as a chance to turn casual World Cup viewers into long term supporters of their local teams.
Garber explained the reasoning behind the move. "Our new format makes sense for our players, our fans, and our clubs, aligning us with the global transfer market, reducing national team conflicts, and strengthening the timing of our playoffs. It reflects exactly where we see MLS going, not just aligning with the best leagues in the world but competing with them."
The league has described this period as MLS 3.0. Officials are also reviewing possible changes to playoff structure and conference alignment. With a major international event ahead and a calendar overhaul on the horizon, MLS is entering one of the most important phases in its history.

How the 2027 calendar change could reshape MLS competition
After the World Cup glow fades, a structural change will follow. Starting in mid to late July 2027, MLS will shift from its current spring to fall format to a summer to spring calendar. The regular season will end in April 2028, with playoffs and the championship taking place in May. There will be an extended winter break, with only a few matches in early December, no games in January, and a restart in February. The league has described this period as MLS 3.0.
