Mikaela Shiffrin came very close to a big result in giant slalom, but one small mistake changed everything. The American ski star had a strong run going and even held a half-second lead over Camille Rast with only five gates left. It looked like she might finally win a giant slalom race again after more than two years. Then she made a small error, had to slow down, and lost valuable time. The mistake pushed Mikaela Shiffrin down the standings after the first run of the race in Åre.
Still, the Olympic champion did not seem upset about what happened. Instead, she said she pushed as hard as she could and had no regrets. Even after the setback, she fought back in the second run and climbed back into the top five. Mikaela Shiffrin also made it clear that mistakes are part of racing and she will keep pushing forward.
Mikaela Shiffrin reacts to giant slalom mistake while praising Emma Aicher and other rivals after Åre race
Mikaela Shiffrin shared her feelings about the mistake soon after the race. Writing on X, she explained that she pushed very hard because she wanted a strong result.
“A little bit of ‘dumb***’ and a little bit of ‘efff yeahhh’. Mistakes happen. Today it happened for me in the first run because I was pushing so hard, which is equally annoying and also exciting. I was so grateful that it was still enough to give it a go in the second run and climb the ranks,” Shiffrin wrote.
The first run mistake cost her a lot of time. She finished 2.29 seconds behind race leader Camille Rast after that run. At the same time, German skier Emma Aicher delivered one of the best races of her career and climbed to fourth place. But Mikaela Shiffrin did not give up. In the second run she attacked the course again and produced a strong performance. Her effort helped her move up the standings and finish fifth overall.
Even after being beaten by other racers like Julia Scheib and Emma Aicher, Shiffrin showed respect for her rivals. She praised their performances, especially Emma Aicher, who has been skiing very well this season.
Later, Mikaela Shiffrin reminded everyone why she is still one of the greatest alpine skiers in history. In the slalom race, which is her strongest event, she delivered another dominant performance. Katharina Truppe set the early pace with a 50.92-second run. Emma Aicher then went faster with 50.73 seconds. But when Shiffrin came down the hill, she beat that time and took the lead by 0.51 seconds.
From that moment, she never lost control of the race. Her second run was even stronger, and she finished 0.94 seconds ahead of Emma Aicher. The victory gave Mikaela Shiffrin her 72nd World Cup slalom win and a record-extending 109th World Cup win overall. Wendy Holdener finished third while Katharina Truppe took fourth place.
Speaking after the race, Shiffrin said she felt both nervous and excited during the run. According to Olympics.com, she said, “That was really amazing. I was pretty nervous and pretty excited, but in the end it was challenging to ski. I pushed really hard and I am quite happy to get to the finish too.”
In the overall standings, Mikaela Shiffrin now has 1286 points while Emma Aicher has 1146. With four races left in the season, the fight for the overall crystal globe is still very close.
