Malinin entered the event as a favorite for gold but finished outside the medals after mistakes in his free skate. After the competition, Mikaela Shiffrin wrote a long and emotional comment to Ilia Malinin. She said, “The Olympics ask us to take a real risk on the world stage. She continued, “And it all matters in the story of becoming the best version of ourselves. We love deeply because we know loss. We feel the pain of defeat because we’ve tasted triumph.”

Shiffrin ended her message by saying, “Heartbreak and victory live right next door. Disappointment and gratitude often coexist. Ilia, we’ve got your back. Proud of you.”



Malinin, known as the “quad god” for his difficult jumps, led the short program but struggled in the free skate, falling multiple times and finishing eighth.

Speaking to NBC Sports, he admitted the moment surprised him, saying, “I was not expecting that. I felt so ready getting on that ice. Maybe I was too confident it was going to go well. Finally experiencing that Olympic atmosphere, it’s crazy. It’s really different.”

Despite the result, Malinin had already helped Team USA win gold in the team skating event earlier at the Games. In an interview with Us Weekly, he explained that people often forget athletes are human.

He said, “In reality, I’m not perfect. I’ll have bad days, I’ll have good days.” He also shared that his bigger goal is to help bring figure skating back into the spotlight and attract more fans worldwide.
