Lindsey Vonn shares emotional hospital update after third surgery as broken leg ends Winter Olympics comeback dream

Lindsey Vonn is back in a hospital bed, and this time she says the meaning of “success” has changed for her. The 41 year old American ski star posted on Instagram from Italy and told fans she had a third surgery on her broken left leg. The injury ended her dream of finishing her Winter Olympics comeback in Cortina. “I had my 3rd surgery today and it was successful,” Lindsey Vonn wrote. She added, “Success today has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago. I’m making progress and while it is slow, I know I’ll be ok.”

The crash happened during the downhill final. Lindsey Vonn was racing at high speed when she came over a hill, clipped a gate, and lost control. She fell hard on the slope as the crowd went quiet. Medical teams rushed in and she was later taken off the mountain by helicopter. Doctors confirmed she broke her left tibia. She was already skiing with a torn ACL in the same knee, but she said that injury did not cause the fall.

In her Instagram message, Lindsey Vonn thanked the people who have stood by her. “Thankful for all of the incredible medical staff, friends, family, who have been by my side and the beautiful outpouring of love and support from people around the world,” she wrote. She also cheered for her teammates, saying, “Also, huge congrats to my teammates and all of the Team USA athletes who are out there inspiring me and giving me something to cheer for.”

A medic who helped her on the slope, Dr Thomas Spallinger, spoke to Spanish newspaper El Mundo. He said, “She was in a lot of pain at the time, so I rushed to begin treatment on site and stabilized her.” He explained they decided to send her to the hospital by rescue helicopter because of the serious leg injury.

One day after the crash, Lindsey Vonn shared more details. “My Olympic dream did not finish the way I dreamt it would. It wasn’t a story book ending or a fairy tale, it was just life,” she wrote. She said she was “5 inches too tight” on her line when her arm caught the gate and twisted her into the fall. “My ACL and past injuries had nothing to do with my crash whatsoever,” she added.

Her father, Alan Kildow, later spoke to The Associated Press. He said, “She’s 41 years old and this is the end of her career. There will be no more ski races for Lindsey Vonn, as long as I have anything to say about it.”

Lindsey Vonn’s career includes 45 downhill wins and 28 super G victories. She has come back from major injuries before, including serious knee damage in 2013. Now, once again, she faces a long recovery. This time, the goal is simple. Heal. Walk strong. And take life one careful step at a time.
