Kyle Busch suddenly disappears from Coca Cola 600 weekend as hospitalization forces shocking NASCAR driver replacement

NASCAR driver Kyle Busch will not race in this weekend’s Coca-Cola 600 after being hospitalized because of a serious illness. The update was shared by Busch’s family on Wednesday through a statement posted on social media. The news quickly spread across the NASCAR world as fans and racing teams sent support messages for the two-time Cup Series champion. The 41-year-old driver was also supposed to compete in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina.

However, his family confirmed that he will miss all scheduled events this weekend while doctors continue his treatment. ESPN first reported the development on May 21. The statement from the Busch family said, “Kyle has experienced a severe illness resulting in hospitalization. He is currently undergoing treatment and will not compete in any of his scheduled activities this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. We ask for understanding and privacy as our family navigates this situation.”

Kyle Busch’s Richard Childress Racing team names Austin Hill as replacement driver

After the announcement, Richard Childress Racing confirmed that Austin Hill will replace Kyle Busch in the No. 8 Chevrolet for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600. Hill currently drives the No. 21 car for Richard Childress Racing in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and now gets a major opportunity at Charlotte.

Richard Childress Racing also released a full statement supporting Busch and his family during the difficult moment. The team said, “Kyle Busch’s health is our upmost priority and he and his family have the full resources of RCR behind them. Kyle is an integral part of our organization and we wish him a safe and speedy recovery.”

The statement continued, “His No. 8 Chevrolet will be ready and waiting for him. We’re thankful to Austin Hill for stepping in to drive the No. 8 Chevrolet this weekend. Please keep Kyle and the Busch family in your prayers, and help us respect the family’s privacy at this time.”

Kyle Busch is currently 24th in the NASCAR Cup Series standings. He has recorded two top-10 finishes through the first 12 races of the season. The Las Vegas native won Cup Series championships in 2015 and 2019 during his time with Joe Gibbs Racing before joining Richard Childress Racing in 2023.

His most recent Cup Series win came in 2023, which was also his first victory with Richard Childress Racing. Right now, NASCAR fans are mainly focused on his health and hoping the veteran driver recovers soon.
