Kenny Wallace reacts to World of Outlaws tragedy at Kennedale Speedway after Marcus Thomas' crash leads to fatal safety vehicle collision
The dirt racing world was shaken this weekend after a tragic accident during a World of Outlaws race at Kennedale Speedway Park. A racing official lost his life during the event, leaving drivers, teams, and fans deeply saddened. The incident happened while officials rushed to help driver Marcus Thomas after his car flipped during the race. According to reports from World of Outlaws officials and local race reports, two track officials drove their side by side safety vehicles onto the track to assist Thomas. However, during the response, the two vehicles collided with each other. One official died from injuries in the crash, while another official was hurt. As of now, there has been no confirmed update on the condition of the second official.
The race was immediately stopped and later canceled as the racing community processed the shocking news. The tragedy quickly spread across social media, where drivers, fans, and racing insiders shared their grief. A NASCAR voice reacting to the incident said the situation felt deeply unsettling. The commentator said, “Last night was one of the worst, eerie feeling racing weekends of the year. One of the officials died. Just unbelievable. My prayers go out to the World of Outlaws sprint car family and the man’s family that lost his life.” The same night also saw another frightening crash at a different dirt race, making the evening even more difficult for racing fans.
During a late model race there, driver Dennis Erb Jr. was driving a backup car after a previous wreck. In the race, his car ended up stopped sideways on the track. At the same moment, race leader Brandon Overton came around the corner behind a slower car. When the slower car moved away, Overton suddenly saw Erb’s car directly in front of him and crashed into it.
Wallace explained how shocking the impact sounded during the broadcast. He said, “All of a sudden Brandon Overton, the leader, doesn’t see him because he’s behind the lap car. The lap car moves away and there is Dennis Erb parked sideways. Brandon Overton just center punched it. It was a wild wreck.”
Even though that crash looked very serious, Wallace later confirmed that everyone involved in that accident walked away safely. Still, the fact that two frightening incidents happened on the same night left the racing world shaken.
Wallace added, “In an eerie way almost simultaneously in completely different states, there were red flags for both series. Thank God everybody walked away from that one, but it was a wild night in dirt racing.”
The accident has reminded many people in the racing world how dangerous motorsports can be, not only for drivers but also for the officials who help keep races safe.
