Keegan Bradley’s controversial green-reading routine divides the golf world raising fresh fan criticisms and calls for a ban
Keegan Bradley can’t seem to get a break. Golf fans are demanding a ban on the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup captain's controversial putting method, which has gotten him in hot water once more. After drawing criticism at the Sony Open, which drew criticism at the Sony Open from January 15 to 18, Bradley’s AimPoint technique has stirred up a controversy that’s dividing the golf world.
The latest uproar began when NUCLR shared a video on X showing the 39-year-old squatting on the green, using his feet to measure slopes for what looked to be a short putt. The caption asked a straightforward question: “#OPINION, do you think AimPoint should be banned?”
At the PGA Tour’s season opener, the Sony Open, Keegan Bradley and his caddie were seen on camera coming onto the green to read a putt using the controversial technique. Fans criticized why a professional golfer needed such a complex process for simple putts after the incident, which caused widespread criticism on social media. However, now, barely 15 days later, Bradley is back in the spotlight for the same reason.
The AimPoint green-reading technique has become the most divisive issue in golf, dividing professionals, analysts, and attendees. On the one hand, some tour pros appreciate the technique’s precision. On the other hand, vocal opponents like Lucas Glover and Paige Spiranac have demanded that it be eliminated from professional golf. Spiranac immediately took a strong stance after a video that went viral showed a player using AimPoint on a putt from about one foot away: “Ban AimPoint.”
However, Paige Spiranac later clarified her stance, saying, “In all seriousness, there’s nothing wrong with AimPoint. The problem is when it’s not taught correctly, which will slow down the pace. Also, a slow player will always be slow with or without it. My issue is when they are so conditioned to use AimPoint that it’s a habit they have to use even on tap-ins. Trampling around the golf hole is not it.”
On SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, Lucas Glover didn't hold back, “AimPoint, statistically, hasn’t helped anybody make more putts since its inception on the PGA Tour. It’s also kind of rude to be up near the hole, stomping around where the break is in your feet. It needs to be banned. It takes forever.”
For Keegan Bradley, 2025 has been a year of AimPoint controversies. Fans were quick to blame his reliance on the technique, even when he struggled at the Hero World Challenge.
