The delay happened because Kayla Harrison suffered a serious neck injury during training. Doctors later found that she had herniated discs in her neck and needed surgery. Because of this, Harrison has been ruled out of the event. The UFC confirmed that the championship fight will be rescheduled once she is fully cleared to compete.

This change is a major setback for UFC 324. The fight was heavily promoted and was expected to draw massive attention. Now, both fighters and fans must wait longer to see this historic matchup.

Kayla Harrison's injury forces the Amanda Nunes UFC 324 fight postponement

Kayla Harrison was deep into her final training camp when the injury happened. As the fight got closer, the pain in her neck became serious enough to need medical checks. According to MMA Fighting, Harrison traveled to New York City for evaluation. Doctors confirmed that surgery was required to fix her neck injury.

Because of this, the UFC had no choice but to remove her from the card. The organization has not announced a return date for Harrison yet. Officials have also not confirmed whether an interim title will be introduced while she recovers.

For Amanda Nunes, the delay is another pause in her comeback journey. Nunes retired in 2023 after a long and dominant career. UFC 324 was supposed to mark her return to the Octagon. Now, she is left without a clear timeline for her next fight.

This matchup carried an extra meaning for both fighters. Harrison and Nunes were once training partners at American Top Team, which added emotion and history to the fight. That made the postponement even tougher for fans.

Despite losing its co-main event, UFC 324 will still go ahead. Justin Gaethje vs Paddy Pimblett will now headline the card for the interim lightweight title. UFC president Dana White had earlier called Harrison vs Nunes “one of the greatest women’s fights ever,” making the late change a tough blow for the promotion.

For now, both fighters wait. The UFC plans to book the fight again when Kayla Harrison is healthy and ready.
