Jakub Mensik is back at the Miami Open, but this time the story is very different. The Czech star returns as the defending champion after stunning Novak Djokovic to win the 2025 title, and naturally, all eyes are now on how he handles the pressure. That is exactly why his latest tennis interview with the media is drawing attention. Fans are curious to see how a young player deals with expectations after a breakthrough moment like that. Mensik, however, is keeping things simple and relaxed.

Jakub Mensik says he is focused on staying relaxed

Looking back at his title run last year, Jakub Mensik made it clear that he is not dwelling on it too much. Speaking to the media ahead of the event, he said, “Of course, last year was already last year. I’m already looking for what is coming next for this week,” he said. For him, that win was a turning point, but not something he wants to carry as a burden. “Yes, last year, it was an amazing experience, amazing result, and actually the breakthrough that probably came in my career. A lot of things changed at the time. After a year coming back here, of course, it’s giving me nice memories, a lot of goosebumps, and I’m really happy to be back here.
Last year’s final was a dream coming true… and a lot of things changed. Everyone who wants to be a top tennis player or actually to win these kinds of big titles and go through breakthroughs and compete against the best players in the world, they have to go through these kinds of experiences. So, I was just taking it as that, not even a responsibility.”That mindset has not changed as he begins his title defence. Mensik is not interested in outside noise or expectations. “I’m going to enjoy every moment on the court like last year. I’m not trying to put any pressure on myself,” he said, adding, "Even from the outside, about the media and the audience and everyone talking about it. I’m just trying to focus on myself. Of course, it’s something new, but something that I’m really excited for and something that I want to have in my career in the future. At the end of the day, there is another weekend, another tournament, which you have to be ready for.”Of course, staying relaxed will not make the draw any easier. Mensik opens against Sebastian Baez in the second round, with a potential meeting against Frances Tiafoe next. Things could get even tougher later, with Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jannik Sinner possible opponents.
