Is Caleb Wilson out for the season? UNC star’s March Madness status explained

The North Carolina Tar Heels suffered a major setback ahead of the postseason after star freshman Caleb Wilson was ruled out for the remainder of the 2025–26 season.

Wilson fractured his right thumb during practice, an injury that will require surgery and officially ends his freshman campaign. The forward had already been recovering from a left-hand fracture sustained against Miami in February, and the latest setback leaves no chance of a return before the postseason.

Wilson led North Carolina in almost every major statistical category over the course of 24 games, averaging 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game.



Shortly after the announcement, Wilson shared a heartfelt message on social media thanking fans, teammates and coaches in Chapel Hill. He described his time with the program as one of the most special experiences of his life and confirmed he would continue supporting the team from the sidelines.

Despite the disappointment, Wilson maintained an optimistic tone, stating he will be supporting his teammates for the rivalry game against the Duke Blue Devils and throughout the playoffs.

Can UNC make a deep run in March Madness without Caleb Wilson?

Losing Wilson at this stage of the season creates a significant challenge for head coach Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels.



North Carolina finished the regular season with a 24-6 record and secured the No. 4 seed in the ACC Tournament, putting the team in a strong position heading into March Madness. However, Wilson’s absence removes the squad’s most productive scorer and rebounder.

The team has been strong even when Wilson was out before, winning five of the six games he missed after the first hand injury. Even still, the Tar Heels' depth and consistency will be put to the test when they face top teams in March without their best player.

If North Carolina hopes to make a deep run, it will need strong performances across the lineup and improved defensive execution.

While the injury ends Wilson’s college season, it is not expected to significantly impact his professional prospects.



The 6-foot-9 forward is widely projected to be one of the top picks in the 2026 NBA Draft. Several mock drafts have placed him around the No. 4 overall selection, highlighting his versatility on both ends of the floor.

NBA scouts are already intrigued by Wilson's stats from his first year in college. He was one of the best dunkers in the country and had great defensive stats, such high block and steal percentages for a guy under 20.

Analysts have also looked at his advanced impact measures and compared them to those of top talents like Zion Williamson and Anthony Davis when they were freshmen.

Wilson won't be able to show off his skills during March Madness, but his regular season performance seems strong enough to make him one of the most interesting prospects in the 2018 NBA Draft.
