Iga Swiatek returns to Indian Wells 2026 with a chance to make history as the first woman to win the title three times

Indian Wells always brings drama, but this year the spotlight feels sharper. Iga Swiatek arrives in California with something to prove. After a slightly uneven start to the 2026 season, the six-time Grand Slam champion is once again the center of tennis news conversation. Fans on the WTA Tour have watched her dominate for years, so even a small dip sparks debate, hot takes and plenty of social media chatter. Her season so far has had flashes of brilliance without the silverware. She reached the Australian Open quarter-finals before falling to eventual champion Elena Rybakina. A trip to Qatar ended at the same stage, this time against Maria Sakkari. Then came a withdrawal from the Dubai Tennis Championships, a move that even drew public criticism from the tournament director. All of it has added intrigue to her return in the desert.

Iga Swiatek’s shot at a record-breaking third title

Here is what makes this week bigger than just another WTA 1000 stop. No woman has ever won Indian Wells three times. Not Serena Williams. Not Steffi Graf. Not Martina Navratilova. Several legends, including Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova, have lifted the trophy twice. Swiatek sits in that same group. She first conquered the desert in 2022, beating Madison Keys, Simona Halep and Sakkari along the way. Two years later, she claimed it again, defeating Sakkari 6-4, 6-0 in the final. Now, as the No. 2 seed in 2026, she begins with a bye and could potentially face Sakkari in the third round. The storyline writes itself, especially after Sakkari recently beat her in Doha.
When Swiatek captured her first title here, she opened up about what it meant. Reflecting on that breakthrough moment, she said, “A lot, for sure,” Swiatek said. “At the beginning of the tournament, I wouldn’t even think about winning, honestly. Of course you have to believe in yourself, but I’m a realistic person, so…Yeah, for sure, especially winning after playing so well in Doha is giving me a lot of confidence and kind of belief that I can do it because, I don’t know. I wouldn’t think of myself as someone who’s ready to play two tournaments in a row and win it. For sure hard work is paying off. Yeah, I mean, I felt for the couple of days the pressure on my shoulders a little bit more because of the stage of the tournament, and obviously how big is it. As you’re saying, it’s the biggest tournament after Grand Slams. Yeah, last couple of days have been really stressful for me. That’s another reason why I’m proud of myself that I made it (sic).”
That 2022 run also pushed her to world No. 2, matching Agnieszka Radwańska as Poland’s highest-ranked WTA player at the time. A month later, she became world No. 1 after winning the Miami Open.
