“I still have no regrets”: Lindsey Vonn shares injury update before another surgery after 2026 Winter Olympics downhill crash
Lindsey Vonn is smiling again, even though she is still in a hospital bed in Italy. The 41-year-old American ski legend shared a video on Instagram on Friday, February 13, saying she is “finally feeling more like myself” after crashing during the women’s downhill at the 2026 Winter Olympics on February 8. The fall left her with a serious fracture in her left leg, and she has already had surgery. Another procedure is scheduled, and more could follow once doctors review new scans.
Right now, Lindsey Vonn is unable to move much, but still, she sounds hopeful. She thanked fans for sending flowers, letters, and even toy sharks. Holding one stuffed shark, she said the gifts have helped her get through “quite a hard few days in the hospital.” She added, “Tomorrow I’ll have another surgery and hopefully that goes well. And then I can potentially leave and go back home, at which point I will need another surgery.” She further added, “This is a hard road I’m embarking on but… I can do this, And I still have no regrets. I will always believe in what’s possible. Always.”
The crash happened just 13 seconds into her downhill run. Lindsey Vonn later explained on Instagram that her torn ACL had nothing to do with it. She had injured her ACL during a World Cup race in Switzerland on January 30 but decided to compete in the Olympics after medical checks and training. On February 1, she said, “I am confident in my body’s ability to perform.”
But during the race, she said she was “simply 5 inches too tight on my line when my right arm hooked inside of the gate,” which twisted her and caused the fall. She suffered what she called a “complex tibia fracture.” Doctors at Ca’ Foncello Hospital in Treviso performed surgery to stabilize her leg.
Since then, she has undergone multiple procedures. On February 11, she posted photos from her hospital bed and wrote, “Success today has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago. I’m making progress and while it is slow, I know I’ll be OK.”
Even while resting, Lindsey Vonn is watching Team USA compete. She said cheering for her teammates has lifted her mood. She also shared a card from a 5-year-old fan that read, “Don’t give up.” Lindsey Vonn replied, “I never will.”
The Olympic gold medalist has won four overall World Cup titles and three Olympic medals, including downhill gold in 2010. Now, her focus is only to heal step by step and return home when doctors say it is safe.
