Jutta Leerdam created history at the Winter Olympics and then made headlines off the ice as well. The Dutch speed skating star won gold and silver at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games. Her fiancé,
Jake Paul, watched proudly from the stands. Soon after her stunning victory, Leerdam’s racing suit became one of the most talked-about sports items in the world. The outfit she wore during her medal-winning races was later put up for auction.
The bidding war shocked everyone. The final price smashed an earlier record set by football legend
Cristiano Ronaldo. What started as a modest bid quickly turned into a historic sale. The signed suit became the most expensive item ever sold on MatchWornShirt.
The record-breaking sale has now become part of Dutch sporting history, adding another remarkable chapter to Leerdam’s unforgettable Olympic journey.
Jutta Leerdam’s Winter Olympic suit sets new auction record
Jutta Leerdam won gold in the women’s 1000m speed skating event with a record time of 1:12.31. She also secured a silver medal at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games. After her victory, she celebrated by unzipping her orange jacket and revealing a white Nike undergarment, a moment that quickly went viral online.
The orange and navy FILA suit she wore in both medal races later went to auction. At one stage, bidding was just £8,416 ($11,197). However, within hours, the amount rose sharply. In the end, a buyer from the Netherlands paid a stunning £170,913 ($227,407) for the signed suit.
The sale broke the previous record on MatchWornShirt. That record was £55,000 ($ 73,179) for Ronaldo’s match-worn shorts from Portugal vs Hungary at Euro 2024.
Tijmen Zonderwijk, co-founder of MatchWornShirt,
said they were thankful to make these Olympic items available. He explained that each piece carries deep importance in Dutch sporting history. He added that receiving nearly €200,000 ($231,970) for one item was remarkable. He also said the total money raised from Olympic items would strongly support many local sports clubs.
The Dutch Olympic Committee partnered with MatchWornShirt for the auction. Most of the proceeds will help grassroots sports clubs in the Netherlands. In Leerdam’s case, IJsvereniging Pijnacker (IJVP), the club where she trained as a young skater, will benefit.
Chairman Johan van Dam said the club was extremely pleased with the outcome. He explained they feel responsible for making careful decisions on how to best use the significant funds received.
