Tiger Woods built his name as one of the greatest golfers in history. But a new book is bringing back a painful story from his early life, long before the fame and trophies. A biography titled “Project Tiger: The Birth of Genius and the Price of Greatness” by journalist Gavin Newsham says the golf star ended a serious relationship in a shocking way. According to an excerpt shared by The New York Post, Woods broke up with his high school girlfriend Dina Gravell by sending her a letter instead of speaking to her directly.
The book says the breakup happened during Woods’ college golf days in the mid-1990s. Dina Gravell was someone Woods trusted deeply, and the two had been together for several years. But their relationship suddenly ended during a golf tournament in California. The story has resurfaced now as the biography prepares for release on March 17, giving fans a new look at the personal sacrifices and difficult choices behind Woods’ rise to the top of the golf world.
Tiger Woods breakup story resurfaces as new book reveals how golf legend ended relationship with Dina Gravell by letter
According to Gavin Newsham’s biography, Tiger Woods and Dina Gravell first met while studying at Western High School in Anaheim, California. They were classmates in accounting class. Their friendship slowly turned into a relationship, and the couple stayed together for years, even after Woods left for Stanford University to play college golf.
The book says their relationship ended during the 1995 US Intercollegiate Golf Tournament Invitational in Palo Alto, California.
During the event, Woods reportedly suffered a shoulder injury on the second day and went to the hospital for an MRI scan. Dina Gravell went back to the hotel and waited for hours, expecting to hear from him.
Instead, something unexpected happened.
After about five hours, she received a message from the hotel reception. They told her a delivery had arrived for her. Inside the case were all the belongings she had left in Woods’ room the day before.
A letter was also included.
According to the excerpt obtained by The New York Post, the letter read:
“I hope the rest of your life runs well for you. I know this is sudden and a surprise, but it is, in my opinion, much warranted. Sincerely, Tiger.”
Dina Gravell later spoke about the painful moment in the 2021 HBO documentary “Tiger.” She described the experience as deeply shocking.
“It was like a death,” she said in the documentary. “It was awful. We had been in this three-year relationship. I replay that day over and over again.”
The documentary also explored how Woods’ parents, Earl Woods and Kultida Woods, pushed him toward complete focus on golf from a very young age.
Newsham’s book claims that several people in Woods’ early life were pushed aside during his rise in golf, including mentor Joe Grohman and former agent Hughes Norton.
In later years, Woods’ personal life also faced major public attention. He married Elin Nordegren in 2004 after meeting her in 2001. The couple had two children, Sam Woods and Charlie Woods, before their marriage ended in 2010 after a widely reported scandal.
Today, Woods appears to have moved forward with his life. The golf legend is now in a relationship with Vanessa Trump, the former wife of Donald Trump Jr., and the pair have been seen together at several golf events since making their relationship public last year.
