“Get him down”: Usain Bolt hints Gout Gout early struggles ahead as Noah Lyles showdown draws attention

The message from Usain Bolt is clear and honest. The fastest man in history believes young star Gout Gout is stepping into a very different world now. And it will not be easy. Speaking to CNN, Bolt said the teenage runner must be ready for losses, pressure, and tough competition as he moves into senior races in 2026.

Gout, just 18, has already shown huge promise. He has even run faster over 200m than Bolt did at the same age. But now, he will face top names like Noah Lyles, Kenny Bednarek, and Letsile Tebogo. This step up matters. And Bolt knows from his own journey that talent alone is not enough at this level.

Bolt did not hide the reality. He said, “I know it’s going to be an eye-opener. And I hope it doesn’t get him down, but motivate him to work even harder.” He explained that the first year in senior competition teaches important lessons. According to him, it is not just about speed. It is about understanding what it takes to improve.

Bolt shared his own story too. As a young athlete, he felt confident after early success. But once he joined the senior circuit, things changed quickly. “I remember coming out of high school… when I got on the circuit, I didn’t win one race,” he said. That phase helped him grow and later become an Olympic champion.

Gout is now entering that same phase. He already competed briefly at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo and raced in junior-level events like the Australian Athletics Junior Championships. In 2026, he plans to compete in major meets like Oslo and Prefontaine, and even race Noah Lyles over 150m in Ostrava.

Bolt also spoke about handling pressure. He said, “Not every day is going to be a great day. Not every time you run, you’re going to win.” He believes learning to deal with defeat is just as important as training harder.

Another key point Bolt raised was the importance of the right support system. Gout is working with coach Di Sheppard and manager James Templeton. Bolt feels this will be important. “He’s a massive young talent… I just hope he finds the right people,” he said.

For Bolt, staying focused is everything. Distractions can easily pull young athletes away. But if Gout keeps his focus on track, Bolt believes success will follow in time.
