Finalissima 2026 venue uncertain as UEFA delays decision on Lionel Messi’s Argentina vs Spain clash in Doha, Qatar

Qatar hosting plans under question amid regional tensions

The possibility of staging the Finalissima 2026 in Qatar has become increasingly uncertain following developments in the region. The Qatar Football Association recently suspended the Qatar Stars League and other domestic matches indefinitely after rising tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

The match was initially planned for the Lusail International Stadium, the same venue that hosted the final of the FIFA World Cup 2022. However, uncertainty about whether Qatar can safely stage the match has led to discussions about alternative venues.

A change of venue would require approval from several football bodies. These include UEFA, CONMEBOL, FIFA, the Royal Spanish Football Federation, and the Argentine Football Association.

In an official statement, UEFA explained that talks with the organisers are still ongoing. The governing body said the local organisers have worked extremely hard to make the event successful and that discussions are continuing to ensure the match can go ahead smoothly. Officials expect a final decision regarding the venue to be made by the end of next week. They also indicated that, for now, no alternative stadium is officially under consideration.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation is reportedly eager for a quick decision because the March international break is the final preparation window before the FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America. Spain are also scheduled to play Egypt national football team three days after the Finalissima, meaning travel plans and logistics must be confirmed soon.

Meanwhile, Morocco national football team officials have reportedly offered to host the game, but the proposal has not gained support from Spanish authorities. Tensions linked to preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2030, which will be jointly hosted by Spain, Morocco, and Portugal, are believed to have complicated those discussions.

With only a few weeks remaining before the scheduled date, football authorities now face a crucial decision about where one of the most anticipated international matches of the year will take place.
