Daniel Naroditsky, chess grandmaster and top US YouTube teacher, dies at 29 leaving community in grief

Daniel Naroditsky, a famous U.S. grandmaster and one of the most loved chess commentators, has died at the young age of 29. The news was confirmed on Monday by the , where he worked and lived, and also confirmed by Chess.com. The cause of death is not yet public. His sudden passing has left fans, players, and top chess stars heartbroken. was just three weeks away from turning 30 and was known not only for his strong chess skills, but also for his warm and funny teaching style online.

Daniel Naroditsky’s chess career and achievements

Daniel Naroditsky became a grandmaster in 2013 when he was only 18 years old. He first became famous in 2007 after winning the gold medal in the Under-12 World Youth Chess Championship. In 2013, he won the U.S. Junior Championship, which gave him a spot in the 2014 U.S. Championship. He was later awarded the Samford Chess Fellowship in 2014.


His last classical rating was 2619, and he had a peak rating of 2647. He once defeated Fabiano Caruana, who was world number two at that time, during the 2021 U.S. Chess Championship.


In August 2025, Daniel Naroditsky won the U.S. National Blitz Championship with a perfect 14 out of 14 score. According to Chess.com, he played over 140,000 games online and was one of the strongest blitz and bullet players in the world.

Daniel Naroditsky was also one of the most followed chess teachers online. He had over 340,000 followers on Twitch and more than 480,000 subscribers on YouTube. Fans loved his calm voice, funny style, and clear way of teaching chess. He was one of Chess.com’s main commentators during big events.

Danny Rensch, Oleksandr Bortnyk and Levon Aronian pay tribute

IM Danny Rensch, Chief Chess Officer of Chess.com, called Daniel “a friend and a brother” and said he cannot find words to describe this loss. GM Oleksandr Bortnyk, Daniel’s close friend, said on his Twitch stream that Daniel Naroditsky was not only talented, but also a very kind human being.


In the 2025 U.S. Chess Championship, the first round began with a one-minute silence for Daniel. GM Levon Aronian was seen emotional after his game and said the loss is painful for everyone.

The Charlotte Chess Center said Daniel Naroditsky was a loving son, brother, and friend, and asked for privacy for the family. They said the best way to honor him is to remember his passion for chess and the joy he brought to millions.
