Chris Eubanks disagrees with fans criticizing Jannik Sinner as Rennae Stubbs joins support after Indian Wells comment
Jannik Sinner found himself at the center of a debate during the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. The Italian star made a simple comment in a press conference, but it quickly started a discussion among tennis fans online. While some people criticized what he said, two well-known tennis voices stepped in to support him. After his second-round win, Jannik Sinner was asked if there was anything he disliked about being a professional tennis player. His answer was short and honest. He said he did not enjoy press conferences because the questions are often the same.
The remark quickly spread on social media. Some fans felt the comment sounded ungrateful. But former American player Chris Eubanks and Grand Slam champion Rennae Stubbs disagreed with that criticism. Both of them publicly supported Sinner and defended his honesty. Meanwhile, the World No. 2 is continuing his strong run at Indian Wells as he aims to win his first title at the tournament.
His short response quickly spread on social media. One fan on Instagram Threads criticized the comment and suggested that players should accept media duties as part of the job.
The fan wrote, “If Jannik Sinner doesn’t want to answer questions, he doesn’t have to. He can always go play tennis in the park, win, and leave. As Don Draper would say, ‘That’s what the money is for.”
“Completely disagree with this take,” Chris Eubanks wrote on Threads. Grand Slam champion and respected tennis analyst Rennae Stubbs also supported Eubanks. She reacted with a short message that clearly showed she felt the same way.
“Same,” Rennae Stubbs wrote.
Even though Sinner admitted he does not enjoy press conferences, he also explained that he appreciates the life tennis has given him.
“I like to go out, play and then leave,” Jannik Sinner said.
He then spoke about how lucky he feels to travel around the world and play tennis at the highest level.
“But for me, I think we have a beautiful life. We see so many great places. I think we have a very nice life, a very safe life also in a way of having great people around. I’m in a very fortunate position,” he said.
While the debate continued online, Sinner stayed focused on the court at Indian Wells. The World No. 2 started his tournament with a dominant win over Dalibor Svrcina, beating the Czech player 6-1, 6-1. He followed that with another strong performance against Dennis Shapovalov, winning in straight sets.
Now Sinner is preparing for his next match at the tournament. He will face Joao Fonseca in the round of 16 on Wednesday, March 11. As the competition continues, Sinner remains focused on winning his first BNP Paribas Open title while the conversation around his honest press conference answer continues among fans.
