Cheltenham Festival 2026 turns tragic as Hansard suffers fatal injury during Arkle race on opening day
The opening day of the Cheltenham Festival 2026 began with excitement for racing fans, but it soon turned into a sad moment at the famous racecourse. A horse named Hansard died after suffering a serious injury during one of the early races on Tuesday, March 10. The incident happened during the Arkle race, one of the first major races of the festival. According to organisers at Cheltenham Racecourse, the horse sustained a fatal injury while running on the flat during the race. Hansard was quickly dismounted and attended by veterinary professionals on site.
After examining the injury, the veterinary team decided that the most humane step for the horse’s welfare was to put him down. Hansard was trained by Gary Moore and Josh Moore and owned by the Noel Fehily Racing Syndicate. News of the horse’s death spread quickly across the racing community and among fans following the festival. The Cheltenham Festival runs from March 10 to March 13, and the incident happened only hours after the event began.
The statement said, “While running on the flat in the second race of the day, Hansard sustained a fatal injury. He was quickly dismounted and immediately attended to by a team of expert veterinary professionals.”
The statement continued, “In their assessment, it was concluded that the best course of action for the horse’s welfare was for him to be put down and our heartfelt condolences are with his connections.”
News of the incident was also shared by Racing TV on social media platform X. The broadcaster posted, “Some very sad news to bring you. Hansard sadly sustained a fatal injury in the Arkle. Our condolences go to connections.”
Following the incident, animal welfare group PETA also released a statement about the death. Elisa Allen, Vice President of Programmes at PETA, said the incident once again raised concerns about horse safety in racing.
Allen said, “Cheltenham and horse racing have claimed yet another victim with the death of Hansard today.” She added, “Some 3,000 horses have died in UK horse racing events in the past decade, and 79 horse deaths at Cheltenham in the past 25 years alone.”
Allen continued by criticising the sport, saying, “Forcing horses to race at breakneck speeds over obstacles invariably leads to crippling falls, heart attacks, and other fatal injuries.”
The Cheltenham Festival is one of the biggest events in British horse racing, attracting thousands of spectators and millions of viewers worldwide. Despite the tragedy, the festival schedule continued with races planned throughout the four-day event.
For many fans and people connected to the racing world, the death of Hansard brought a moment of sadness during what is usually one of the most celebrated weeks in horse racing.
