Cristiano Ronaldo is preparing for yet another
FIFA World Cup with Portugal. At 41 years old, the veteran forward is set to feature in his sixth World Cup next month. Portugal have been placed in Group K alongside DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia. After recently winning the Saudi Pro League title with Al-Nassr, Ronaldo is now focused on helping his national team chase football’s biggest prize.
Many supporters feel this could be Ronaldo’s final opportunity to win the FIFA World Cup. However, Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez believes the legendary striker is motivated by much more than trophies. According to Martinez, Ronaldo’s greatest strength is his endless desire to improve and compete at the highest level despite already achieving almost everything in football.
Roberto Martinez praises Cristiano Ronaldo’s mentality and hunger
Roberto Martinez said that the Portugal coaching staff see Cristiano Ronaldo as the perfect example for young footballers. He said the veteran forward is not driven only by awards or titles. Instead, his mentality and hunger to keep improving are what truly separate him from others.
The Portugal manager shared that Ronaldo continues to work with the same intensity even after winning major honours throughout his career.
Martinez noted that many players lose motivation after reaching the top, but Ronaldo remains fully focused on becoming better every single day.
The coach also highlighted Ronaldo’s discipline and commitment to maintaining his fitness levels. He admitted that genetics play an important role, but added that Ronaldo uses every possible method to keep his body in peak condition. Martinez stressed that the Al-Nassr star’s mindset is the biggest reason behind his incredible longevity in football.
Martinez further praised Ronaldo for setting an example to younger players in Portugal. He believes the striker’s mentality is rare in modern football and said very few athletes can maintain such dedication for so many years.
The Portugal boss even backed Ronaldo to continue playing at the highest level for several more years. Martinez stated that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has earned the right to decide his future with the national team.
Portugal will begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against DR Congo on June 17. Ronaldo is expected to lead the side once again as they aim to win the tournament for the first time in history.
