“It's been perfect story”- Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas announces emotional FC Barcelona exit after 14 historic years
Two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas has confirmed that she will leave FC Barcelona Femení after 14 memorable seasons. The announcement came only days after Barcelona lifted the UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy, marking the perfect ending to one of the most successful eras in women’s football. Putellas shared the emotional news through a farewell video posted jointly by the club and the player on Instagram, leaving fans around the world emotional.
The 32-year-old midfielder leaves Barcelona as one of the greatest players in the history of the women’s game. She played more than 500 matches and scored over 230 goals for the club while winning multiple league and European titles. Putellas also became one of the leading faces of women’s football globally after winning back-to-back Ballon d’Or awards in 2021 and 2022. Her departure signals the end of a historic chapter for both Barcelona and Spanish football.
Alexia Putellas joined FC Barcelona in 2012 from Levante and quickly became the heart of the team. Over the years, she helped transform the club into one of the strongest sides in women’s football. During her time at Barcelona, she won 38 trophies, including four UEFA Women’s Champions League titles and 10 Spanish league championships. She also became the second-highest appearance maker in club history with 507 games.
In her farewell message, Putellas reflected on her emotional connection with the club and supporters. She said she still remembers visiting Camp Nou as a child with her father and dreaming of one day wearing the Barcelona shirt. She explained that football at that time was very different for women and never imagined thousands of fans would one day chant her name inside the stadium.
The midfielder also spoke about difficult moments in her personal life and how Barcelona gave her strength during challenging times. She said the club helped her recover emotionally after losing her father and became much more than just a football team for her. Putellas added that she always tried to give everything for the badge and believed the shirt could never be defended halfway.
Barcelona confirmed that her final farewell ceremony will take place at Camp Nou. Reports in Spain suggest that Putellas could continue her career in England, with London City Lionesses linked as a possible destination. Despite leaving, Putellas said she will always remain a proud Barcelona supporter and described her journey with the club as “a perfect story”.
