Andre Bell, an HBCU basketball player, died at 20 after a Nashville highway shooting

College basketball and the Nashville community are in shock after the news of Andre Bell's death. Andre Bell was a 20-year-old Fisk University basketball player who was fatally shot on a highway in Nashville on Sunday evening. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the head and did not survive the grave injury. His unexpected death has left his coaches, family, teammates, and fans grieving for what was to be a bright future for the young man.

Andre Bell is remembered as a leader on and off the court

Andre Bell was a pivotal part of the Fisk University men’s basketball program. Coach Jeremiah Crutcher said that Andre Bell was a dominant player on the court and even more so off the court. Andre Bell was known for his positive spirit, his infectious grin, and his ability to lead; therefore, he served as an example to many of his teammates and athletes in younger age groups.

Andre Bell was a unifying person for the Fisk University Bulldogs. He was committed to his team and provided an uplifting spirit that left an imprint on the Bulldogs community that extended beyond basketball. His absence is a source of deep grief to the entire campus and the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) sports world.

Details emerge in the investigation into Andre Bell’s shooting

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) has discovered that Andre Bell and his friends were on their way back to campus from a gymnastics event earlier that day. Andre Bell was a passenger in a white Nissan Sentra. He was traveling on the interstate when a dark sedan drove up next to him, fired shots, and struck Andre Bell.

As soon as he was shot, Andre Bell's vehicle slowed and spun out of control back into traffic, colliding with a red pickup truck. Andre Bell was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but he did not survive. The MNPD Homicide Unit continues to investigate Andre Bell's murder and attempts to locate individuals responsible for this crime.

Andre Bell may forever be remembered as an exceptional athlete and a person committed to his education and athletic pursuits during college, as well as being an individual who motivated numerous young people while growing up in Jackson, TN.
