Andre Agassi did not hold back when he spoke about Joao Fonseca after the teenager’s tough week in Rio. The eight time Grand Slam champion said the 19 year old is feeling the weight of big expectations, especially at home. His comments came right after Joao Fonseca crashed out of the 2026 Rio Open in the second round on February 20. Fonseca lost 5 to 7, 6 to 3, 6 to 4 against World No. 91 Ignacio Buse in the Round of 16. The defeat hurt more because it happened in front of his home crowd in Rio de Janeiro. This was only his fourth match of the 2026 season, and he has managed just one win so far. After the loss, he slipped to No. 38 in the ATP singles rankings. Coming into this year, the Brazilian star carried huge hopes. In 2025, he broke into the top 25 and won his first ATP titles in Buenos Aires and Basel. He had also lifted the 2024 ATP Next Gen Finals trophy after beating American Learner Tien in the final. Many saw him as the future of Brazilian tennis. That rise, however, has now brought pressure.

Andre Agassi addresses Joao Fonseca’s Rio Open exit and pressure of expectations after loss to Ignacio Buse

Andre Agassi was in Rio during the ATP 500 event and watched the match closely.
Speaking to local media on February 19, as reported by Punto de Break, he explained what he feels is going on with Fonseca.“Joao Fonseca should take it as a compliment that people think he has to win every match, but he needs to learn that other people’s expectations aren’t his responsibility,” Agassi said. “On the other hand, improving every day is definitely his responsibility. So, I hope he’ll be able to distinguish between other people’s expectations and what he needs to focus on.”He continued, “I know it’s difficult because we place so much importance on winning or losing, and we forget what we need to do to improve, and victories result from a thousand good things. He has the luxury of being young, but he’s already feeling the pressure of expectations.”Fonseca’s season started with a shock at the Australian Open, where he entered as the 28th seed but lost in the first round to No. 85 Eliot Spizzirri. Then, at the Argentina Open, where he was defending champion, he fell in the first round to No. 71 Alejandro Tabilo.Back in Rio, he was seeded third and seen as the favorite. After losing to Ignacio Buse, he spoke honestly in his press conference, as quoted by Tennis Uptodate.“Opportunities at this level are unmissable. Sometimes I make mistakes, but it’s a process, it’s about keeping improving, about continuing to work. Sad about this loss, but okay. This is tennis. Some weeks you lose and you have to change your mindset and look for solutions.”There is still a positive note. Joao Fonseca is also playing doubles in Rio with former world No. 1 Marcelo Melo. The pair defeated second seeds Andres Molteni and Maximo Gonzalez in the quarterfinals. For now, the spotlight is bright. But as Andre Agassi made clear, growth matters more than noise.
