Alysa Liu is no longer just a promising name in American figure skating. After the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, she stands as the face of it. The 20 year old delivered a free skate that felt both fearless and controlled, earning a 226.79 and capturing gold. In doing so, she became the first Team USA women’s singles skater to win Olympic gold since 2002 and the first American woman to medal at all since 2006. That is not a small gap. It is a generation.
Her impact did not stop there. Liu also helped secure gold in the team event, doubling her Olympic haul and instantly raising her profile beyond the rink. Before the Games, she had fewer than a million followers on Instagram. Within days of her final skate, that number surged past six million.
The spotlight found her fast. And with it came questions that reach well beyond jump combinations and program components.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan published on January 7, Liu opened up about her love life with refreshing honesty.
“Oh my god, this is, like, the first time I’ve talked about this. That’s a whole other thing that I’m not feeling right now. I have so much love in my life already, and I have so many amazing people, I just haven’t felt the need to look for more or look elsewhere. I really love myself. And my standards are quite high, too. But also, my schedule, especially since starting to skate again, is pretty hectic,” Liu said.
She did not hedge. She did not tease. She was clear about where she stands.
“If I were to date someone, we’d each have to make tons of sacrifices. It’s just not worth it at this point to build something. I think when it comes, it will. I love being single, I really do. I do see myself being single for a long time. Especially right now, I choose friendships over relationships any day,” she added.
That candor has only fueled more conversation, especially after a clearer image of a tattoo on her lower back surfaced online on February 26. The design had briefly appeared in a past TikTok video of Liu dancing, but the new photo sparked speculation about its meaning. Some online users suggested it could depict Baphomet, a controversial occult symbol. There is no confirmation of that, and for now it remains guesswork.
What is certain is this. Liu’s skating earned her fame. Her personality is sustaining it. The Olympics may be over, but the attention is not. Whether she chooses to share more or keep parts of her life private, she has already shown a steady sense of self. That might be her most impressive quality yet.
