Hockey Chandigarh
has announced to celebrate the birthday of triple Olympic gold medallist late
Balbir Singh Sr
on the lines of the national sports day. Balbir Singh, 95, passed away last month after battling multiple health issues.
“As a tribute to the hockey legend, Hockey Chandigarh has decided to celebrate his birthday every year similar to the national sports day. It was unanimously decided that Hockey Chandigarh will help the talented hockey players who can’t afford the hockey kits and other equipments, which will be a befitting tribute to Balbir Singh Sr,” Hockey Chandigarh secretary Anil Vohra told TOI.
Vohra’s comments came after a meeting of Hockey Chandigarh headed by president Chander Shekhar was held at Sector 42, Hockey Stadium Chandigarh. Before the start of the meeting, two minutes silence was observed to condole the demise of the former World Cup winning coach.
Vohra also said that proper norms regarding Covid-19 of Chandigarh Administration like thermo scanning, hand sanitization and social distancing were fully kept in mind during the meeting, where the official website of Hockey Chandigarh was launched by the president.
The association also decided to celebrate the upcoming Olympic Day 2020, on June 23 as per the guidelines of
Hockey India
. A five-member committee will be formed to discuss and finalize the ways to celebrate Olympic Day.
