Nelson Piquet is one of the original rule-benders in Formula 1: quick, daring, and always a little bit off the beaten path when it came to the racing line. All before the days of data engineers and media-savvy public relations, Piquet drove purely on instinct, claiming a constructors’ championship and then two drivers’ championships as Formula 1 road racing demanded as much bravery as brains. More recently, however, he’s come to attention once again, this time for a connection to the current face of F1 dominance: Max Verstappen. To understand the current relevance of his name, though, you have to understand where Nelson Piquet came from, and what exactly his reputation within the sport represents.

From karting rebel to three-time world champion

Nelson Piquet Junior was born in Brazil in 1952. The young Brazilian started his career in motorsport through a combination of intelligence and aggression. It wasn’t long before he scored his inaugural Formula 1 World Championship in 1981 with Brabham. This showed that he was capable of outsmarting his competition, besides outrunning them. Within the short span of five years, he added two more world championships in 1983 and 1987.
Piquet was famous for his ability to quickly adjust to technological improvements, such as turbo engines, often driving cars and himself pretty hard.
While other drivers banked solely on guts, Piquet drove like a chess master, thinking several moves ahead at speeds of 300km an hour. Not always elegant, but his tactics were successful. When he decided to quit racing, Piquet had chalked up 23 Grand Prix victories: he was one of F1’s greatest thinkers, a man with the insight into changes in his car before the engineers put it down on paper.

The Verstappen connection and a legacy that lives on

In the current F1 era, Piquet is constantly mentioned in connection with Max Verstappen, and not as a rival but in a familial capacity. This is because Piquet is Kelly Piquet's father; Kelly happens to be Verstappen's partner and the mother of his child. This has therefore formed a symbolic connection that bridges both worlds. This is a connection formed between a past world-class driver and a current representative in this field. Although Verstappen’s achievements are exclusively his, it is difficult to deny the impact. His starting skill, mental strength, and aptitude under pressure seem to be a family affair. Although Piquet has from time to time been quite vocal, as well as occasionally controversial, his bloodline for racing is beyond question.Today, the Piquet heritage isn’t just about awards. It’s in the narratives, in the strong opinions, and in the new page of Formula 1 history written alongside Max Verstappen. In racing circles, it’s not only about championship titles; Piquet established a speed that continues to be relevant today. In F1, to transcend mere seconds to such a degree that a lap time spans several decades means you’ve really bested the clock. Also Read: Kamui Kobayashi net worth: Contracts, F1 winnings, and income sources explained
