"McLaren did a great run": Lewis Hamilton names 9x and 6x F1 world champions as one of the quickest teams

Pre-season Formula 1 hype has kicked into high gear, with Lewis Hamilton showering colossal praise on McLaren's recent performances, referring to them as ‘one of the quickest’ on the grid. The seven-time world champion has been impressed at McLaren's blazing speed during tests, commenting on their steep trajectory of development, which has installed them as realistic contenders for next season. Hamilton made these remarks while discussing the initial form displayed by teams such as McLaren and Red Bull.

Stunning revival of McLaren's in performance

McLaren's revival over the last year has been nothing but spectacular. Following seasons where the Woking-based outfit battled for form, they made sweeping upgrades in 2023, which immediately added punch to their performances. Towards the second half of the season, McLaren was regularly pushing the leaders, grabbing podiums and raising eyebrows within the paddock.

Hamilton is well familiar with McLaren as he joined the team early on and captured his initial world championship in 2008. The thing which impressed him during the pre-season testing was how the team posted a consistent pace both in the short runs as well as the long runs.

While praising McLaren, Hamilton also went on to explain that results of pre-season testing are not always reflective of what really happens. Teams drive differing fuel loads, test un-proven parts, and hide their true performance level. Yet Hamilton's admission that McLaren are among the fastest of the lot hints at their improved status as a serious contender for the current heavyweights of Red Bull and Mercedes.

New chapters and a new competitive landscape

With Lewis Hamilton joining Ferrari in 2025, his comments on McLaren's improvement are especially noteworthy, as it indicates the championship is potentially entering a period of greater than two-team dominance.

Hamilton also capitalized on Red Bull's nine constructors' championship wins and Mercedes' six, conceding only that the two teams have set the bar extremely high. But McLaren's upward curve and fast-forward development plan may make them an exciting upstart in the battle for supremacy.
