Lewis Hamilton claims F1 sprint pole position at the Chinese Grand Prix

This continues to highlight Hamilton's extraordinary skill as a driver in Formula 1, now in the suits of Ferrari, particularly at the Shanghai International Circuit, where he has six wins recorded. This is more than any other driver.

Lewis Hamilton's remarkable performance in sprint qualifying

Lewis Hamilton performed well in the sprint qualifying session on Saturday, beating all his rivals to take the top spot. World champion Max Verstappen placed second and McLaren star Oscar Piastri impressed with third. However, McLaren showed a competitive tempo all session, with Lando Norris and Piastri topping SQ1 and SQ2 respectively. So it was Hamilton who in the end was the fastest man on track, setting the outright lap record just before the start of the GP2-style shootout sprint race.


With track conditions changing during the session, Lewis Hamilton's experience proved to be the key to his pole. Drivers had to make up for lost time with rain threatening at the start, so modifications to improve lap time were implemented quickly. Verstappen did everything to challenge for pole but lost the top spot due to a small mistake in the final sector.

Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri put his notably impressive performance on full display, showcasing McLaren’s increasing competitiveness this season and plenty of setting up for a battle in the sprint race.

Lewis Hamilton celebrated his pole position in the sprint race with his father Anthony Hamilton. The pair were pictured celebrating together in the Ferrari camp, with Anthony hugging his son in a proud, emotional embrace.


One of the critical figures in Lewis’s journey to F1, Anthony has been a sounding board throughout his career. Their party underscored the importance of this milestone given Hamilton's continuing ability to confound age and deliver peak performance.

Implications for the championship standings

Championship implications to the sprint qualifying result Norris currently sits atop the drivers' championship after taking victory in the season opener in Australia. It is pole position for Hamilton, which will not only give him confidence but also, in the next races when the typology of the track will allow it, put him in the best position to fight for the lead.
