"It will be tight": Red Bull Technical Director Pierre Wache admits team is behind Ferrari and McLaren for 2025 season

As the 2025 Formula 1 season approaches, Red Bull Technical Director Pierre Wache has made a breathtakingly candid statement, saying reigning champions Red Bull may not be the clear favorites this year. In an unusual display of weakness from a powerhouse team such as Red Bull, Wache conceded that Ferrari and McLaren have taken some massive strides during the winter break, with Red Bull potentially falling behind in some aspects of performance.

Ferrari and McLaren's substantial off-season development packages

In seasons past, Red Bull had established the pace, with Max Verstappen winning several championships in dominating fashion. That has not been the situation during the 2025 pre-season, however. Ferrari and McLaren have revealed radical technical advancements, new aerodynamic setups, and improved power unit performance that could give them an early-season edge.

Pierre Wache admitted that while Red Bull's RB21 is an evolution of their title-winning car, Ferrari and McLaren's development rate has been faster. Ferrari, driven by Frederic Vasseur, has heavily emphasized the maximizing of straight-line speed at no expense to cornering capability, an Achilles heel that cost them dearly in 2024.

Wache's comments suggest Red Bull might have difficulty coping with the intensified competitiveness, especially if Ferrari and McLaren keep moving forward on their current path. The future transition could lead to an incredibly competitive three-horse title fight than Formula 1 has seen in a long time.

Red Bull has technical problems but also a potential re-organization

Added to Red Bull's worries is the changing driver dynamic. Lewis Hamilton's switch to Ferrari in 2025 has given new energy to the Italian team, with the seven-time world champion looking to make an eighth title his own. McLaren's rookie driver pair, led by Lando Norris, keeps on improving in confidence and testing Red Bull's supremacy.

As the season gets going, Wache's admission serves to emphasize that Red Bull's hegemony is far from guaranteed. Whether they can close level on these early deficits via in-season improvement, or Ferrari and McLaren are poised to take control, is one of the biggest 2025 storylines.
