Red Bull Racing’s hopes of dominating the 2025 Formula 1 season have taken a hit after a disappointing pre-season testing session in Bahrain. The defending champions have admitted that things did not go according to plan, with Max Verstappen voicing his concerns about the team’s trajectory. The three-time world champion had already warned that unless Red Bull addressed their persistent issues, he would struggle to defend his title this year.

Max Verstappen Casts Doubt on Red Bull’s Title Defense Amid Early Struggles

Max Verstappen, who played a crucial role in Red Bull’s dominance in recent years, has ruled out a victory at the season opener in Melbourne. With the 2025 RB21 car struggling to match the pace of its rivals, he is skeptical about Red Bull’s chances at Albert Park on March 16. “I don’t think we can compete for the win in Melbourne,” Verstappen stated after analyzing his team’s pre-season performance.

The Dutchman admitted that McLaren appears to be the team to beat this year, with both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri clocking impressive lap times during testing. The British outfit has undergone a major overhaul with the MCL39, showing intent to fight for both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships. On the other hand, Red Bull’s struggles have left Verstappen wary. “If you look at the lap times, I think McLaren is the favorite. Not everything went completely smoothly for us, but on the other hand, we do have some ideas about how we can improve ourselves,” he explained.

Despite a lackluster start, Verstappen remains optimistic that Red Bull can make improvements in the coming weeks. While a victory in the first race seems unlikely, he hopes the team can regain its footing as the season progresses.

Red Bull has been grappling with performance issues since the latter half of the 2024 season, particularly with balance problems in the RB20. The struggles became evident as the team slipped to third in the Constructors’ standings, trailing McLaren and Ferrari. Many have speculated that the departure of legendary F1 designer Adrian Newey in May 2024 played a role in the team’s decline, although Red Bull has denied any connection.

While Verstappen remains cautious about Red Bull’s immediate prospects, former F1 driver and pundit Martin Brundle has a different take. Contrary to Verstappen’s assessment, Brundle believes the Dutchman will still be the favorite to start the season. However, with McLaren emerging as a serious contender, Red Bull will need to act fast if they hope to reclaim their dominance.
