Australian billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes defends F1 sponsorship and private jet purchase amid climate campaigning

Atlassian co-founder and climate activist billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes has justified his purchase of a private jet and sponsorship of the Williams Formula One (F1) team, arguing to meet the demands of business as well as family responsibilities. The Australian entrepreneur, noted for his vocal support for climate action, admitted the ‘deep internal conflict’ over his ownership of a private jet but stressed his dedication to carbon offsetting.

Defending the private jet: A necessary compromise?

Cannon-Brookes, who is worth an estimated US$13 billion by Forbes, clarified that his Bombardier 7500 business jet allows him to effectively operate a worldwide business from Australia without sacrificing being a present figure in his family. In a comprehensive LinkedIn post, he called this a ‘hard, continual tradeoff.’

Though conceding private jet emissions were a concern, Cannon-Brookes justified his method, saying he uses a strict carbon offsetting approach, such as direct air capture technology and sustainable aviation fuels. He claimed these make his flights ‘net negative’ in carbon terms—an alternative, he said, that is not yet available for commercial flights.

“It probably comes as no surprise; I have an extremely rigorous carbon regime for all my flying, including using direct air capture and sustainable fuels for the carbon and contrails, to far exceed my flight footprint,” said Cannon-Brookes according to a Guardian report. “These options aren’t practical for commercial flights but are viable privately. This means my flights actually have a net negative carbon footprint.”

Though he has been a self-proclaimed advocate for sustainability, Cannon-Brookes has come under fire for the implied hypocrisy in his approach. He has promoted climate policies and invested in renewable energy while leading a high-carbon personal lifestyle.

Still, he is firm in his conviction that technological innovation and strategic investment will propel large emissions reductions.

A vision for Australia's renewable future

Apart from corporate efforts, Cannon-Brookes has also been an outspoken advocate for making Australia a renewable energy leader. “My commitment to climate is as strong as ever. I’m still pretty damn focused on making an impact at a large scale, removing huge volumes of emissions through active investments and philanthropy, and have the proud scars to prove it.” Cannon-Brookes said he remained determined to help transform Australia into a “renewable energy superpower.”

Cannon-Brookes' actions reflect the nuances of sustainable leadership in the business world. With seemingly contradictory decisions, his actions indicate the dilemma of reconciling the needs of international business with green commitments.
