NEW DELHI: Famed Indian footballers like Baichung Bhutia, Rennedy Singh, Amal Raj, Prasanta Banerjee, Shyam Thapa and Bruno Coutinho had their first brush with stardom in the Subroto Cup.
The inter-school tournament, named after the late Air Marshall Subroto Mukherjee, will this year celebrate its golden jubilee.
"No country organizes such a tournament.
And since this is the 50th year, we will try to organize it in a better way," said Air Marshall J N Burma, tournament co-ordinator, at a press meet on Wednesday.
This time, the tournament gets bigger with the participation of 62 teams, including 32 junior teams (U-17) and 30 sub-junior teams (U-14). For the first time, the tournament will also host a team from UK, Army Cadet Force, along with teams from Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
The prize money is bigger - winners of the junior and The qualifying rounds will be conducted from October 6 to 15 while the main round will kick off on 16th. The two finals will be played on October 25th and 26th.
