KOLKATA: It was a different day at the Sandeshkhali Kanmari Social Care Football Academy at North 24 Parganas in West Bengal on Saturday. The state known for producing some of the leading footballers of the country over the years is slated to add some women footballers to the list this time.
Three footballers from Indian Super League (ISL) side Emami East Bengal’s Sauvik Chakraborty, Shubham Sen and Tuhin Das paid a visit to the academy to encourage local girls to take up the sport.
They were joined by Banyan Tree Group head and academy president Prabir Roy Chowdhury, local MLA Sukumar Mahato, academy secretary Debraj Mahato along with members of the Calcutta Sports Journalists Club (CSJC), who have joined the initiative to support the development of the game in the area.
A large number of people gathered to witness a women’s friendly football match participated by local players at the academy ground in the evening. The academy is dedicated to promoting women football and aims to bring out talented players from the area.
The CSJC has pledged its support to the academy and has promised to always stand by it in the future as the project aims to bring about a change in the fortunes of a number of female players coming from a not-so-decent economic background. This initiative is a step towards encouraging the growth of football in the region and providing equal opportunities to female players.
The development of sports in any region not only benefits the players but also contributes to the overall growth of the community. With the media coming in support in the form of CSJC, the focus is likely to be on all the budding footballers of the region.
