Why is winning the Europa League crucial for Manchester United's and Tottenham Hotspur's future?
Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are set to face off in Wednesday's Europa League final in Bilbao, with both teams seeking to rescue their disappointing Premier League seasons and secure a valuable Champions League spot for the next season. The clubs currently occupy 16th and 17th positions respectively in the Premier League with just one game remaining, marking their worst performances in the Premier League era.
The teams narrowly avoided relegation battles, saved only by the poorer performances of Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton, who were relegated to the Championship.

"It really does impact I think the next two or three years for both clubs," said former United captain Gary Neville. "They need investment into their teams and if they don't get this Champions League money then there is going to be a lot less investment, which means they might not make the Champions League next season."
Manchester United's financial situation is already under scrutiny following Jim Ratcliffe's minority stake purchase. The club has implemented substantial cost-cutting measures, including 250 job cuts last year and plans for 200 more redundancies.
Ratcliffe stated in March that United would have "run out of money at Christmas" without these measures. The club has announced plans for a new 100,000-capacity stadium, estimated to cost £2 billion.
United's manager Ruben Amorim has struggled since taking charge in November, securing only six wins in 26 Premier League games. "For me the Champions League is more important," Amorim said. "The best way to help us to get to the top in a few years is the Champions League. It is not the title, the trophy. The most important thing is how this title could help us to get back to the top faster."
The winner of Wednesday's final could benefit from an estimated £70 million windfall. Manchester United earned £52 million from their Champions League group stage appearance last season.
"A good season in the Champions League can be worth far in excess of £100 million," according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire. "By the time you combine gate receipts, sponsor bonuses and the prize money available, the numbers involved are eye-watering."
Tottenham's chairman Daniel Levy faces criticism from supporters for prioritising financial stability over trophy success. The club hasn't won silverware in 17 years despite significant revenue growth and a new stadium hosting various events. Despite new revenue streams, Tottenham have recorded losses exceeding £100 million in the past two seasons.
The losing team faces significant challenges in returning to top-level European competition, with increased games and prize money now available through UEFA's recent competition restructuring. This European final represents a crucial turning point for both clubs, with Champions League qualification offering a faster route to recovering from the debilitating blow of not qualifying for any European competition otherwise.
The match will be played at San Mames stadium in Bilbao.
