Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth at Anfield had its share of drama on and off the pitch. The match was briefly halted in the first half when Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo reported racial abuse from a spectator.
The incident happened in the 28th minute, prompting referee Anthony Taylor to consult both managers, Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola, as well as the captains. After a short pause, play resumed. The
Premier League later confirmed the stoppage was due to Semenyo’s complaint.

Semenyo, who received strong support from his teammates, stayed on the field and scored both of Bournemouth’s goals in an emotional night. An anti-discrimination message was broadcast at Anfield after the break. The FA described the matter as deeply concerning and pledged to work with officials and authorities to investigate. Police removed a supporter from the stands at half-time.
Liverpool eventually won 4-2, with late goals from Federico Chiesa and
Mohamed Salah sealing the victory. Semenyo had earlier levelled the score with a stunning solo run after Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo had put the hosts ahead.
The game was played in an atmosphere heavy with emotion as Anfield paid tribute to forward
Diogo Jota, who tragically died last month in a car accident alongside his brother, Andre Silva. A giant mosaic with their initials and shirt numbers was displayed, and a banner was unfurled for Jota’s wife and children.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot called the tribute “impressive and powerful”. Salah, who scored in stoppage time, honoured Jota with one of his trademark celebrations and was moved to tears at full-time as the crowd chanted the Portuguese star’s name.
It was a night that combined football’s joy, grief, and an unwelcome reminder of the challenges the sport still faces off the pitch.
