MUMBAI: Champions ONGC scored a goal in each half to register a 2-1 win against Indian Navy in an Elite Division 'Super Six' play-off match, of the MDFA League, played at the Cooperage ground, on Monday evening.
Lavino Fernandes and Parwinder Singh were on target for ONGC, while Indian Navy reduced the margin through Sunil K. Nair who converted a penalty late into stoppage time.
ONGC after drawing goalless with Mumbai Customs in their opening play-off match, now have two wins to their credit and sit atop the six-team table with seven points. For the sailors this was their second successive defeat after they suffered a 0-3 loss to Air India in their first match.
In an evenly matched contest, Indian Navy custodian Bhaskar Roy made a couple of fine saves to deny ONGC from taking an early lead. In the 22nd minute Roy palmed over Parwinder Singh's fierce free-kick from the left for a corner and from the resultant flag-kick he blocked Joel Sequeira's header from close.
However, he was completely beaten when Lavino Fernandes after dodging past a couple of defenders on the left found the far top corner of the net with a deft chip in the 39th minute. ONGC got the second goal when Parwinder's swerving flag-kick from right deflected off defender Akash Kamble's head and past goalkeeper Roy who was caught off-guard in the 50th minute.
Later Navy had two good chances to reduce the deficit. First Dilbag Dhar's rasping 20-yard shot beat ONGC goalkeeper Billyfong Narzary but to his bad luck the ball crashed into the horizontal bar in the 55th minute and later Suresh Babu missed another good chance in the 90th minute. Navy finally got on the scoreboard, when they were awarded a penalty after a defender handled the ball in the area following Suresh Babu's centre from the left in the 93rd minute. Nair coolly converted from the penalty spot.
