The attack occurred on Friday evening when a man rammed a car into a crowded Christmas market, resulting in five fatalities and more than 200 injuries.

The DFL expressed its shock over the attack and recommended that players wear black armbands as a sign of mourning during the Bundesliga and second division matches this weekend.

Additionally, the league has supported the observance of a minute's silence to pay tribute to the victims.

"German professional football is shocked by the attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg," the DFL wrote in a statement.

"The DFL recommends wearing a black armband of mourning for this weekend's Bundesliga and second division... and supports a minute of silence in tribute to the victims."

Furthermore, the German handball league has postponed the Bundesliga home match between Magdeburg and Eisenach, originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, in light of the tragic incident.

Authorities have arrested a 50-year-old Saudi doctor of psychiatry at the scene, near the damaged SUV that ploughed through the festive crowd. Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited the site on Saturday, calling for unity and condemning the "terrible catastrophe".

The upcoming football matches in Germany will proceed with solemn tributes and gestures of mourning to honour the victims of the Magdeburg attack, reflecting the nation's solidarity and respect in the face of this tragic event.
