Chennaiyin beat Delhi to break home jinx; Odisha split points
CHENNAI: At long last, Chennaiyin FC gave their fans a reason to cheer, breaking their home jinx in the Indian Super League this season after beating Sporting Club Delhi here on Friday.
Farukh Choudhary’s 11th-minute strike handed them a 1-0 win and took CFC to eight points from eight matches, same as Delhi’s. After a bright attacking start, Farukh, receiving a pass from Alberto Noguera on the left, advanced into the box and unleashed a shot with his weaker left foot. Goalkeeper Nora Fernandes could not do much and watched it sail over him into the top-right corner.
Just before half-time, defender Alex Saji denied CFC a two-goal cushion. Irfan Yadwad delivered a teasing cross from the right that fell kindly for Daniel Chima Chukwu, but just as the striker pulled the trigger, Saji from inside the six-yard box slid in to block and keep the lead in check. After the break, the home side struggled to make inroads into the attacking third in the opening 10 minutes while Delhi kept creating opportunities.
Odisha FC settle for draw as Md Sp earn first point: Odisha FC’s finishing woes continued to haunt them at home as well as they were held to a 1-1 draw by wooden spooners Mohammedan Sporting Club in the Indian Super League at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Friday, reports Sourav Modak.
For the Kolkata giants though, it was a welcome result as they brought home a point, their first in this edition following seven straight losses. The hosts had taken the lead in the 40th minute through VP Suhair while T Adison Singh scored the equaliser for MSC in the 57th minute as the game ended with scores level at the final whistle.
