KOLKATA: After a humiliating 1-4 loss to arch-rivals East Bengal at the Salt Lake Stadium here, questions have been raised about Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Subrata Paul's integrity with the serious allegation of his being bribed to deliberately underperform fast doing the rounds.
To make matters worse, the Mohun Bagan management has decided to suspend him for an indefinite period while they conduct a probe by a one man technical committee.
"We believe he has not given a 100 per cent effort. We will hand him the show-cause letter immediately," an angry general secretary Anjan Mitra said after the match. Even Paul's 'revered coach' Amal Dutta is giving 'sound bytes' which, far from protecting him, were enough to ruin his career.
"There was this general perception that he was a killer (of Junior). I worked hard to put him back on track, but, with the kind of fishy goals he conceded (on Sunday), he has blown away everything," Dutta said soon after the match. "I don't think he will be able to play for the next few months. This is a big scar on his career."
