KOLKATA: There is still a lot of talk going on about
Mohun Bagan's decision not to field their team in the Kolkata Derby of the
Calcutta Football League Premier Division A against arch-rivals East Bengal on Wednesday. Even Bagan's fate for the no-show is yet to be decided by the
Indian Football Association
.
However, that cloud of controversy seems to have had no affect on the players as the green and maroons thrashed Army XI 6-0 in their local league match at the Mohun Bagan club ground on Saturday evening.
Daniel Bidemi
is in red-hot form as he followed up his brace in the previous match against United SC with a quadruple while Darryl Duffy and Azharuddin Mallick also got on the scoresheet. Five of the six goals were scored after the change of ends.
Shankarlal Chakraborty's men now have 19 points from seven matches. This doesn't include the Kolkata Derby as IFA is yet to make a decision on that match.
Bagan opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Bidemi latched on to a through ball by Azharuddin inside the rival box and took a shot at goal that went in after deflecting off an opposition player. The Federation Cup champions failed to add to their tally in the first session but it was absolutely smooth sailing after the half-time break.
It was 2-0 for Bagan and Bidemi in the 53rd minute when he nodded in after Azharuddin had flicked it to him from a free-kick by
Saran Singh
. It became 3-0 six minutes later when Duffy prodded in off a cut-back by Bidemi. The latter then brought up his hat-trick in the 65th minute with a powerful right-footed drive.
Young Azharuddin then found the back of the net with a shot from inside the box in the 78th minute before Bidemi completed the rout in the added-on time.
